Every driver in Canada is expected to see rising gasoline prices as they fire up their vehicles for road adventures on the Victoria Day long weekend. According to Measurement Canada, which is responsible for checking gas station devices across the country, about 3% of the 3,907 refueling pumps tested at retailers at gas stations in Toronto in 2018 were out of order. These are about 117 pistols, which is actually slightly better than the national average.
“In 2018, 81,068 refueling pistols were tested at points of sale throughout Canada,” Measurement Canada. "Of these, 96% were accurate, and 4% were inaccurate."
The average GTA pump pumps 3,000 liters per day, so a one percent error can result in consumers paying an extra $30 per day.
The ministry did not specify what percentage of pumps produces more fuel than the meter indicates and whether such guns exist at all. Any pump with errors greater than these is immediately decommissioned. But pistols are checked only once every two years. Oil analyst Dan McTig calls for more frequent checks.
Winnipeg residents will see prices at the pump near the mid-80 cents per liter mark.
Manitoba also sits second in the country with the biggest price change from last year, while Ontario sits first. That’s due to plunging oil prices over the past two months, according to fuel experts.
Worries of an economic downturn, a U.S.-China trading tiff, and concerns that members of the OPEC oil cartel won’t live up to production cuts influenced the price cuts.
