Manitoba's largest school division complains that due to the reduction of funding it receives $200,000 less than before.
Winnipeg School Division made a statement and said that it fully supports the increase in property tax because it can help fill a hole in provincial funding. In the case of a positive decision, the property tax will be increased by 2.9%.
The division said it is going to spend part of the money to help children suffering from autism and children with hearing problems. Conditions of learning will also be improved. For example, classrooms will be upgraded.
"The board has identified accountability and accessibility needs to be addressed in this budget," WSD board finance chair Lisa Naylor said. "We are consulting the public on enhancements in those areas, as well as looking closely at existing programs and services for possible cost savings."
Budget consultations will be held next week on Tuesday and Thursday.
