Fire at the recycling plant

A fire is always a scary and dangerous thing, people might get hurt or killed, especially children and elderly citizens since they are not able to react fast and evacuate the building by themselves.

On August 8, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at the Emterra Environmental facility in the 1000 block of Henry Avenue.

When WFPS arrived, heavy smoke was seen from a rubbish fire. The fire was in one of the structures but was making its way to another structure through an elevated conveyor belt.

Staff in the building had safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Thankfully, no one was injured, as of now there are no damage estimates, but the cause of the fire will remain under investigation.

Fire at the production facility is also dangerous for all employees and the fire evacuation plan needs to be in place, with regular fire safety training for staff. Fire Chief Mark Reshaur says not enough people have evacuation plans for their own homes and places of work.
