--About the Presentation
We are now in an era where genetic testing of a patient is routinely done and can help prevent or diagnose disease and select the most appropriate treatment. This is known as precision or personalized medicine. At the same time Canadians are aware of genetic discrimination and issues related to privacy. We are fortunate that the legislation formally known as Bill S-201, now known as the Genetic Non-Discrimination Act (GNA), was passed into law in Canada as this protects individuals from disclosing genetic test results to insurers and employers. In this talk we will discuss why Bill S-201 is important for everyone. It will help ensure all individuals, regardless of age, faith or cultural background, have access to new tests and new therapies and be assured that their personal genetic information is protected. This is what health equity (fairness) is all about.

--About the Speaker
Dr. Cheryl Rockman-Greenberg obtained her M.D., C.M. from McGill University in Montreal in 1974 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics in 1979 and in Medical Genetics in 1996. Since 1979 to the present she has worked in Winnipeg as a clinical and metabolic geneticist, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and as a clinician scientist at the University of Manitoba and in the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba. An academic clinician, her research focuses on “Rare Genetic Diseases”, identifying their genetic basis and translating research discoveries into relevant patient care programs. Her philosophy remains that we all can contribute to a better Canada and a better health care system by getting to know the challenges of rare and ultra rare genetic disorders and the amazing resiliency of individuals and their families.
