A karateka's primary strategy for self-defense is to utilize footwork, punches, kicks, and strikes from a standing position in order to defend oneself and escape. However, what happens when an altercation turns into a close quarters grappling situation? Or worse yet, a struggle on the ground where punches and kicks are much less effective? How does one defend oneself, control the situation, and ultimately stand up to escape harm?

This FREE 2-hour introductory class will cover the basics of clinch strategy from the standing position, a takedown with follow-up ground control from the top position, and escapes from the bottom of mount position to regain a standing position. Techniques taught in this introductory class are fairly basic and easily applied by all students. A karate-gi can be worn for the class.

The class will be taught by Gracie Jiu-Jitsu certified instructor Mike Tavares, founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Winnipeg. Assistant Sean is a black belt in Shotokan Karate who has been training BJJ for several years.

Afterward, students will be able to sign up for a 4-week Jiu-Jitsu camp to be held at Kildonan Karate this summer.
