Orange Shirt Day is named in honour of Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day of residential school. Orange Shirt Day honours residential school survivors and remembers those who did not survive. It is an opportunity for all peoples of this land to discuss colonization, past and present, and gather in a spirit of reconciliation.

Gerri Pangman will lead this special beading workshop, where participants will create tiny beaded orange shirt pins on felt. Pangman has led beading classes for family members of Missing and Murdered Women and Girls at Ka Ni Kanichihk’s Medicine Bear Counselling / Support and Elder Services. As an activist, she has spoken at the Assembly of First Nations in Regina. Her beadwork is available through her company, J.D.M. Indigenous Designs.

The Cross-Cultural Craft Program is supported by the Indigenous Initiatives of the Province of Manitoba.

MAWA is a ground level accessible space, with an accessible entrance and washrooms. ASL is provided upon request, with two weeks notice. Service animals are welcome; pets are not. We request that all guests refrain from wearing scented products out of respect for those with sensitivities. MAWA programming is open to participants of all genders unless otherwise noted. MAWA’s washrooms are gender neutral.

During the day, there is metered street parking in front of MAWA for $2.50/hour. After 5:30pm and on Sundays, street parking is available free of change. There are several paid lots nearby, including Sports Manitoba on Pacific Ave. and a public lot at Main St. and Logan Ave. that charge $2 for the first hour and $1 for each additional hour. Participants can no longer park for free in the old Mitchell’s Fabric parking lot.

MAWA can be easily reached by public transit. The northbound bus stops 60 paces from MAWA’s door and is serviced by bus routes 15, 16, 18, 20, 44, 45 and 47.
