How to calm the child's fears before the new school year: advice of an experienced psychologist

The back to school period is very difficult for many children, and you must help your child cope with his fears.

Dr. Cathy Moser worked for 10 years in the school system, and then she opened her practice. She like nobody else understands fears and anxieties of children and therefore her pieces of advice are especially valuable for parents.

Children who go to kindergarten or go to school for the first time are afraid to leave their parents' home because outside of it they do not feel safe. However, Cathy believes that the main reason for their anxiety is in comparison with other children. They are afraid to do something worse than their peers and because of this they lose confidence in their abilities.

Older children begin to worry because of their appearance. They compare their clothes and other things to other children and are afraid to look stupid or to be ridiculed. Also, older students can be very upset because of the assessments and mistakes made.

Dr. Moser organized special support groups for children during this period. She believes that it is very important that children know that these fears are experienced not only by themselves. During back to school, children need special support and attention.
