Sean Penn will shoot a new film in Winnipeg in the summer

The film is based on the true story of a criminal who lived a double life in order to support his daughter.

Hollywood actor and director Sean Penn will spend some time in Winnipeg this summer. Two-time winner of the Academy Award for the best male role will shoot his new film in the city.

On Tuesday, March 12th Buffalo Gal Pictures, an independent production company, held a casting for children actors for a feature film about a father who lives the double life of a counterfeiter, a bank robber, and a crook to support his daughter.

It is based on the non-fiction book by Jennifer Vogel called “Flim-Flam Man,” written about her father.

The most recent provincial budget gave a boost to the Manitoba film industry, with funding for a film and video tax credit growing from $16 million to $31.5 million. A rapidly growing industry in Manitoba is getting a major boost from the provincial government.

On Screen Manitoba said the province is already gearing up for a big year with two series coming, one feature currently being filmed, and two more on the way. It said many others are interested in filming in Manitoba this year.

So Manitobans and Winnipeggers have a chance to participate in the new movie shoot, even kids have a chance to get on screen in a future movie directed by Sean Penn himself!
