Child and Family Services Agency will not hire new volunteers

Child and Family Services Agency informed that the agency will not hide new volunteers because one of the volunteers was charged with sex assault.

In the summer of 2018, one of the agency's volunteers was accused of sexual exploitation of a juvenile boy. The Police do not divulge names to protect the identity of the child.

As it became known, sexual harassment could occur between the spring of 2017 and the spring of 2018. The accused was repeatedly sent to teach a child in a family home but his work there was stopped after the child complained.

There is also information that the man was taking the child out of the house once a week. Special attention has not been paid on that situation because the tutor can provide training in the home, and also outside of it.

A representative of Child and Family Services Agency of Manitoba said that the situation is very serious and they will temporarily not recruit new volunteers. At the moment, the agency employs about 130 volunteers who provide all kinds of services, from mentors, drivers, teachers, to assistants in organizing various events.

The government of Manitoba reported that in the future the agency is obliged to check all volunteers for the presence of criminal records and whether they are on the register for cruel treatment of children.

The agency must also adopt the following rules:

volunteers should not take children anywhere without official permission;

they should not contact with children during non-working hours;

all services should be done in the presence of other people.
