Police helicopter spots stolen vehicle

Police arrested two teenagers on car theft charges.

Early morning on Sunday, approximately around 1 a.m. a vehicle was stolen on the Arlington Street Bridge. Later the same day the stolen SUV was spotted driving from an Air1, a Winnipeg Police service helicopter, which was patrolling the area. When the vehicle stopped, two suspects fled on foot, but later were arrested and remain in police custody.

Two youth suspects arrested, one is a 17-year-old male, and another one is a 16-year-old, both charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5000.

Car theft crime is on the rise in Winnipeg. Unfortunately, almost every day a vehicle gets reported stolen, most of them are located later by police on the streets, driven by impaired criminals. Many of such crimes involve youth, they just do it for fun or without thinking, while on meth or under other drugs influence. Just yesterday morning a stolen van driver lost control and crashed into a Manitoba Hydro distribution line, estimated damages are worth of $120,000.
